Be Kind Rewind

Any fan of cinema in recent times will tell you how amazing Michel Gondry's work has been in the last ten years or so. First there was "Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind" a film which is always up there in my top 20. It teamed Gondry's lunacy and visual flare with Charlie Kaufman (One of the best screen writers working today). Both of these guys have an interesting twist on there view of everyday life. This shared vision is what really sells the beautifully told story of Eternal sunshine.

Next for Gondry was a strange step for him as although he has had extensive experience in shooting everything from music videos (doing videos for artists such as Bjork, Daft punk, Chemical brothers and many more.) to full length features, this next film would be his first self written piece of work, and compared to Eternal sunshine his "Science of sleep" did lack slightly in its narrative but visually this film is something really special and really has to be seen to be believed, and was in my top 10 of 2006.

So we come to his newest film "Be kind rewind" which although is definitely his most mainstream work to date, starring Jack Black and Mos Def it still has an interesting twist and completely fits into the Gondry cannon. So i am really looking forward to seeing this film and hope for more movie madness from Gondry in the future.

Modest Mouse - Dashboard (Live on Letterman)

I am really into this band at the moment, and although they have been around for a long time and i have always heard the name thrown about, i have only recently started listening to them and am especially enjoying there more recent albums, although older fans of the band seem to prefer the earlier installments in there discography. Maybe this is something that will eventually happen with me, nevertheless this is a single of the newest album with there newest member (Johnny Marr out of the Smiths!) live on David Letterman.

The Writers Strike.

Above is a video explaining the reason why the Writers are currently striking over the pond. I completely agree with the strike as the writers are the heart and blood of all of our most loved TV and film, and yet can you name more than three screen writers you love without consulting IMDB? Compare this to other mediums such as music or literature where the writer is king and gets the fair cut that the original spark behind these brilliant ideas deserves. Meanwhile in the land of TV and film its a different story altogether. This video can explain much better then i can and also has all the statistics and the glossy production to be a much more enjoyable experience ... Enjoy!

Also below is a link to the main site of the strike at the writers guild of America website. Check it out.

Lost season 4 Trailer!

Spoiler Warning!!! Spoiler Warning!!! Spoiler Warning!!!

So after eight long months of waiting lost season four is here! All be it only half a season thanks to the Writers Strike but as i am pro writers strike i suppose that is a necessary evil. I warn you now do not watch this trailer if you do not like being spoiled as it basically outlines the coming season in its one minute forty running time.

Very excited for this upcoming season, but can it live up to the hype? i really hope it does as many times before Lost seems to cling to the edge of brilliance but there is always the fear of it falling into crap alley.

Studio 60 on the sunset strip

To say that Studio 60 on the sunset strip had cancelled written allover it from the opening of the first episode is an understatement. although this sounds like a criticism its one of the most endearing things about this smart show that takes so many swipes at the state of TV in the states its hard to see how this show got green lit in the first place. Episode one opens with the legendary Judd Hirsch (of taxi fame) about to get fired as he takes over his own show (studio 60 which is very similar to US shows like SNL) and gives an amazing diatribe to his live audience about the state of TV in America. This is a perfect way to set you up for this funny, clever "dramedy" from the creators of the west wing.

Although if its big laughs your looking for in a show like this 30 Rock will probably be more up your street, which is another show i love and am sure will get its own review some day. Despite this fact the writing on this show really shines and under its inspired casting of main and guest stars is really brought to life with sharp and biting wit. Matthew Perry and Amanda Peet for me both give astounding performances as a dry witty, writer and a strong, intelligent producer for the fictional comedy show respectively. It is a shame then that this show received few awards and its only Emmy win was for best guest star (John Goodman who to be fair was excellent as the hard southern judge Robert Bebe) and not for its writing or its main stars and never will due to it being cancelled before its time.

So basically this is yet another example of US TV networks cancelling shows that have real promise.

Welcome to my blog

So this is my first post on my first blog. The idea behind me doing this blog is to have somewhere for me to write reviews of anything that interests me (i.e Film, TV, Music, Books/Comics etc) And also a place where i can just rant without immediately offending anyone.
